What does it take to begin a brand new digital undertaking?

Have you been planning to start a new digital project for ages but never got around to taking the plunge?

We’ve all been through this!

I have a long list of domains that I bought once to plan a new project that I never used.

So don’t feel bad It is never too late!

The following is required to start a new digital project:

1. Start with the name

This step requires some serious thought. Remember that your brand name is something that you will cling to for years. Rebranding is a nightmare. So make sure you get this right the first time. Things to consider:

  • How easy will it be to misspell it? Running this generator may give you some ideas. You can also share your name with friends and get their input on how easy it can be to type your future brand name into the browser’s address bar.
  • Will there be negative associations that would affect your branding? I usually check Urban Dictionary for parts of my brand name to see if there is anything I need to know about this concept
  • Are there any strong brands with the same or a similar name? Search Google and see if anyone is already known by that name. You don’t have to be in the same niche to turn your reputation management into a nightmare or to cause ongoing brand confusion.

2. Set up a website

This may be a challenging move if you don’t have any technical skills (like most of us), but the reality is it has gotten a lot easier! In fact, with most major hosting providers, setting up a WordPress site is just a matter of several clicks and following the clear steps.

From there, all you have to do is pick a topic. Unlike your brand name, a theme is easy to change so you don’t have to burden yourself with this step too much. I usually start with a decent free topic and fill it with content that is found by search engines.

3. Develop your content plan

You can develop content in different areas of your website: frequently asked questions, a blog, a news area, product or service descriptions, testimonials or ratings, your “About” page – all of these deserve your attention!

Try not to sound too corporate. Nobody likes talking to a company so add some personality. Be yourself. And skip the gobbledygook!

First, start with your audience

One useful way to do this is to describe your perfect customer. What are you reading? What are you interested in? What are you worried about? What do you dream of achieving? What are their objections to buying from you? When you think of your perfect customer, your content becomes interesting, engaging, and compelling.

Next, decide what content your perfect customer is interested in

Which questions can you answer? How can you create testimonials? How can you show the benefits of your products and overcome objections? What language is she speaking?

Your content shouldn’t just be about your services / products

Show that you are an expert in your industry. Comment on industry news. Interview experts. And don’t forget that your content can be text, audio, visual, or video. Most of all, be useful. Help your perfect customer with solutions to their problems.

You can use an editorial calendar to create content on a regular basis

It’s absolutely okay to just create something once a week or even every other week. The quality of your content is more important than the quantity.

And don’t forget that you also need to spend time promoting your content

Do you know which social media channels your audience is most active on? Just start with two or three channels. Don’t try to be everywhere.

Build a following naturally. If something doesn’t work, switch to a different channel or change the way you get involved. Ask different questions or share different stories. But always be authentic.

This is what content marketing is all about. You need to provide high quality content that is useful to your audience, that engages your audience, and that instills trust and authority for your business.

4. Define your conversion funnel

Don’t start your project until you’ve set up your conversion funnels! Otherwise, all of the traffic that you generate from your startup activities will be lost forever. First, define your main conversion, for example:

  • Buy your book
  • Set up your demo
  • Arrange a telephone consultation
  • Send an email to for information about your services
  • Sign up for your course, etc.

Then identify and set up the different avenues to achieve this goal:

  • Add your CTAs: “Contact Now,” “Buy Now,” etc. I’ve made a huge list (which you can download) of how to phrase your calls-to-action to take action.
  • Add lead generation forms: Those who want to hear more from you share their contact details. Using forms of conversation is a smart idea as they feel more human and encourage more action
  • Add a “Recommend” button to encourage your website visitors to recommend your product or service to a friend
  • Create and install Facebook pixels to reach your website visitors through Facebook ads and generate more conversions from people who already know your brand but haven’t taken any action
  • Add social evidence to show how your customers are enjoying your product

There are a lot more conversion optimization tactics out there that also generate more traffic to play with.


Starting a new project is scary and overwhelming, but you will also feel inspired again.

I firmly believe that the riskiest thing in life is not taking risks. If you are afraid of falling, you never learn to walk! So don’t wait any longer: start your project now!
